Clisson is a unique town in the Loire-Atlantique department, celebrated for its 'Little Italy' atmosphere in the heart of the historic Marches of Brittany. Following its near-total destruction during the Wars of the Vendée, the town was reimagined and rebuilt in the early 1800s by artists who had lived in Rome. They introduced Tuscan architectural elements, such as red bricks, rounded arches, and tiled roofs, which starkly contrast with the grey granite typical of the region. The town is anchored by the massive ruins of the Château de Clisson, a key stronghold of the Dukes of Brittany. Situated at the junction of the Sèvre Nantaise and Moine rivers, the town features striking riverside views and romantic promenades. Clisson is also the heart of the Muscadet wine region, producing crisp white wines exported globally. Today, the town achieves a rare balance between its serene, artistic heritage and the lively energy of the Hellfest festival, one of Europe's largest extreme music events, which takes place on its outskirts every summer.
