Saint-Georges-d'Oléron lies in the heart of the 'Luminous Island' of Oléron and is home to a rich historical heritage. The village center is dominated by an impressive 11th-century Romanesque church, one of the oldest on the island. The commune spans the entire width of the island, offering both the calm waters of the eastern coast and the powerful Atlantic surf to the west. The beaches of Saint-Georges are renowned for their beauty and variety. Boyardville is especially popular as it gives a prime view of the famous Fort Boyard. Plage des Saumonards, bordered by a thick pine forest, provides a nearly pristine natural setting. Surfers and kitesurfers flock to Plage des Huttes in the north, while families favor the fine sands of Plage de Domino. Beyond the beaches, the region is a center for oyster farming; the colorful shacks in the small ports are well-suited for tasting fresh seafood directly from the local producers.
