Naintré is a historically significant commune in the Vienne department of western France, renowned for hosting the vast Gallo-Roman site of Vieux-Poitiers. This ancient settlement was once a thriving city at the strategic confluence of the Clain and Vienne rivers, covering nearly 80 hectares in its prime. The town is home to a unique artifact: the Menhir of Vieux-Poitiers, a Neolithic standing stone later repurposed by the Romans with carved inscriptions, making it a rare bridge between two distinct historical eras. Additionally, the remarkably large Roman theater, which could once accommodate 10,000 spectators, stands as a testament to the area's ancient cultural dominance. Geographically, Naintré serves as a natural corridor between the cities of Poitiers and Châtellerault. Today, it is a dynamic community with a population that enjoys a mix of suburban convenience and rural tranquility. The local economy is bolstered by its membership in the Châtellerault urban community, with sectors ranging from manufacturing to cultural tourism. Naintré’s commitment to preserving its archaeological treasures while fostering modern development makes it a key cultural destination in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
