Île de Ré, known as 'La Blanche' (The White Isle), is an upscale and naturally preserved island located off the coast of La Rochelle. Since 1988, it has been connected to the mainland by a 3-kilometer bridge. The island consists of ten appealing villages, all adhering to a strict architectural code of white facades and green shutters, creating a unique visual harmony. Its capital, Saint-Martin-de-Ré, is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its perfectly preserved star-shaped fortifications designed by Vauban. The island's north is dominated by traditional salt marshes and oyster beds, while the south features sprawling sandy beaches. A quirky local symbol is the 'donkeys in trousers' (baudets du Poitou), a tradition that began as protection for the animals against swamp insects. With flat terrain and 100km of paths, cycling is the primary way to explore.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.
