💡 Tips
- Visit the dune at sunset for the most spectacular views as the sun goes down over the Atlantic.
- The official car park is paid and fills up quickly in high season. A good alternative is to arrive by bicycle or bus from Arcachon.
- Climbing the dune is more strenuous than it looks. Take plenty of water and be prepared for hot sand on sunny days.
- Check the tide times. At low tide, you can walk far out on the beach and see the vast Banc d'Arguin sandbank.
🍽 Food
Try them straight from the producer at one of the oyster huts ('cabanes à huîtres') around the bay, served with lemon and local white wine.
Freshly boiled shrimp, often available at local markets like the one in Arcachon. A simple but delicious seaside treat.
A local speciality, small cream puffs filled with a light cream. Look for them in bakeries and pastry shops in the area.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Visit the covered market for a great selection of local produce, from seafood and cheese to wine and pastries.
You'll find many small shops in the coastal towns selling marine-themed clothing, decorations, and local crafts.
Escape the sun and the crowds with a walk through the vast pine forest (Forêt des Landes) located right behind the dune.
Take a shuttle boat to this nature reserve opposite the dune. It's a paradise for birdwatchers and a peaceful spot to relax.
Most visitors stay on the bay-facing side of the dune. Walk over to the other side to experience the vastness of the Atlantic with fewer people around.

The Dune du Pilat is a natural wonder located at the entrance of the Arcachon Bay, standing as the tallest sand dune in Europe. Reaching heights of up to 110 meters, this massive shifting sand formation stretches for nearly 3 kilometers between the Atlantic Ocean and a vast pine forest. It is a dynamic monument that moves inland by several meters each year, pushed by the prevailing winds. Visitors can climb to the summit using stairs installed during the summer months or by trudging through the sand for a more physical challenge. From the ridge, the panorama is dramatic, offering a stark contrast between the deep blue of the ocean, the turquoise waters of the Banc d'Arguin nature reserve, and the endless green carpet of the Landes forest. It is a premier spot for paragliding, as the updrafts along the slope provide great conditions for long flights. After exploring the dune, visitors often head to the nearby oyster huts in the bay to sample fresh seafood or relax on the beaches of Le Moulleau. The site is easily accessible from Bordeaux, making it a favorite day trip for both locals and international tourists looking for a unique coastal experience.
