Stains is a historic commune located in the northern suburbs of Paris, within the Seine-Saint-Denis department. Its name is derived from the Latin 'Stagna,' referring to the ponds and marshlands that once characterized the area. Historically, Stains was a major agricultural supplier to the French capital, renowned for its intensive market gardening. The city's most significant landmark is the 'Cité-jardin de Stains' (Garden City), constructed between 1921 and 1933 as a model for social housing. This beautifully preserved district, featuring harmonious brick architecture and lush greenery, is protected as a historical monument and remains an architectural reference in Europe. Geographically, Stains borders the massive Parc Georges-Valbon, providing its citizens with vast areas for outdoor activities. The 20th century saw the town transform into an industrial hub, which in turn attracted a diverse population from around the world. Today, Stains is a dynamic urban center focused on social renewal and sustainable development. It is efficiently connected to the regional transport network via the RER D line and the T11 Express tramway, facilitating easy access to the heart of Paris and the northern business districts.
