Montfermeil, located in the Seine-Saint-Denis department, sits atop an elevated ridge and is inextricably linked to Victor Hugo's literary masterpiece, "Les Misérables." The celebrated author used this very town as the setting for the Thénardiers' grim inn, where the young orphan Cosette lived, a rich literary legacy that is celebrated throughout the municipality today. One of the main points of interest is the reconstructed Moulin du Sempin, a traditional windmill that serves as a powerful reminder of the region's once purely agricultural past. The Château des Cèdres, with its magnificent park and extensive arboretum, provides botany enthusiasts an impressive variety of rare tree species and beautiful walking paths. Thanks to its high elevation, Montfermeil provides remarkable panoramic views of the Paris skyline stretching across the horizon on clear days. Today, the town has evolved into a densely populated suburb, highly accessible via a modern tram network. The unique combination of a famous literary heritage, historic green spaces, and the ongoing evolution of modern urban life makes Montfermeil a fascinating cultural stopover in the Île-de-France region.
