💡 Tips
- The RER E line is your fastest route to central Paris, making this town an excellent, quieter base for a broader trip.
- The local museum (Musée Alfred Bonno) features crucial context for the scarce remains of the Royal Merovingian Abbey.
- Traffic near the town hall can be very dense; rely on the town's excellent bus network instead of driving locally.
- Strolling along the Marne river captures the classic Parisian 'Guinguette' spirit without the heavy crowds.
- When buying tickets for public transport, make sure they cover Zone 4, as standard central Paris tickets will not work here.

Chelles is a historic city located 18 kilometers east of Paris in the Seine-et-Marne department. Its history is inextricably linked to the Merovingian and Carolingian dynasties; it was a royal villa and the site where King Chilperic I was assassinated in 584. Queen Bathilde founded the Abbey of Chelles in the 7th century, which became a powerful institution where the first 'Carolingian minuscule' script was reportedly developed by nuns. The city is bisected by the Marne River and the Chelles Canal, providing scenic waterfronts and water-based transport routes. During the Industrial Age, Chelles grew rapidly as a railway hub, hosting a large marshalling yard that remains a major local employer. Modern Chelles gives a high quality of life with extensive parks, such as the Parc du Souvenir and the heights of Montguichet, while its excellent train connections to Paris-Est make it a preferred residential choice for commuters.
