Herblay-sur-Seine is a thriving municipality in the Val-d'Oise department, located on the right bank of the Seine river. Known simply as Herblay until 2018, the city added 'sur-Seine' to its name to celebrate its maritime heritage. Its history is deeply rooted in the extraction of limestone; the local quarries provided high-quality stone for grand Parisian projects like the Panthéon. These underground tunnels later became famous for mushroom farming, a staple of the local economy in the early 20th century. The town's architectural centerpiece is the Church of Saint-Martin, a Grade I listed building featuring a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The riverside docks and paths offer remarkable views that once captivated Impressionist painters, notably Paul Signac. Modern Herblay is characterized by a balance between its historic village center and the large commercial district of Patte d'Oie, which is one of the busiest in the Île-de-France region. Residents benefit from excellent rail links to Paris via the Transilien Line J, making it a sought-after residential area that combines urban amenities with riverside serenity.
