Cormeilles-en-Parisis is a pleasant city in the Val-d'Oise department, perched on the slopes of the Parisis hills and offering some of the most spectacular panoramas of Paris and the Seine valley. The city's identity is deeply rooted in the history of science and art as the birthplace of Louis Daguerre, the inventor of the daguerreotype, the first publicly available photographic process. A dedicated museum explores his life and contributions. Beyond its cultural fame, Cormeilles has been a cornerstone of the French construction industry due to its massive gypsum quarries, which remain among the largest in Europe. The city's military heritage is represented by the Fort de Cormeilles, a sprawling fortification built in the 1870s as part of General Séré de Rivières' defense system for Paris; today, it is a lively site for art exhibitions and community markets. The urban landscape of Cormeilles is evolving, with new developments like the Seine-side marina ('Seine Parisii') blending modern living with the town's traditional character. Its green spaces, historical sites, and efficient rail link to Saint-Lazare station make it a highly desirable place to live and visit within the Île-de-France region.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
