Saint-Maurice is a prestigious and historic commune located in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, in the Val-de-Marne department. Tucked away between the right bank of the Marne River and the edge of the Bois de Vincennes, it provides an exceptional living environment that blends urban convenience with vast natural spaces. The town is most famous as the birthplace of Eugène Delacroix, the master of French Romantic painting, born here in 1798; his legacy is honored by the preservation of his family home. Another major historical landmark is the Hôpitaux de Saint-Maurice, formerly known as the Charenton Asylum. This institution played a significant role in the history of psychiatry and was where the Marquis de Sade was famously confined until his death. Today, Saint-Maurice is a highly sought-after residential area, valued for its proximity to Paris, accessible via the Metro Line 8. The riverside quays along the Marne are popular for walking and cycling, while the town's social life centers around its well-preserved historical buildings and local markets.
