Château de Vincennes (France)

Weather…

The Château de Vincennes, located on the eastern edge of Paris, is the only medieval royal residence in France to have preserved its fortress character almost entirely. Started in the 14th century under Philip VI and completed under Charles V, it served as a primary seat of the French monarchy until Louis XIV moved the court to Versailles in 1682. Its most striking feature is the 52-meter-high keep (donjon), the tallest medieval fortified tower in Europe, surrounded by a deep moat and extensive curtain walls. Within the enclosure stands the Sainte-Chapelle de Vincennes, modeled after the famous chapel on the Île de la Cité. After its time as a royal palace, the castle was used in the 18th and 19th centuries as a prison for prominent figures including the Marquis de Sade and Denis Diderot. Today, the fortress houses the Historical Service of the Ministry of Defense and stands as a significant monument to late medieval military architecture and royal history.
