Straddling the banks of the Lys river in the Nord department, Estaires is a historic textile town characterized by its strong Flemish cultural influences. Completely rebuilt after suffering total devastation during the 1918 Battle of the Lys in World War I, the town features striking Flemish-style brick architecture, most notably its impressive Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) completed in 1930 with a distinctive belfry standing 42 meters high. Estaires is deeply tied to its unique local folklore, embodied by the legendary donkey Aliboron, whose giant effigy is paraded through the streets during the lively Cavalcade festival held every Pentecost. The commune is also the origin of the Baudet d'Estaires, a recognized regional breed of donkey, and a specific local poultry breed. Visitors can walk along the towpaths of the Lys, which offer peaceful routes for cycling and hiking, connecting the town to the surrounding agricultural plain. The Église Saint-Vaast, reconstructed in a neo-Romanesque style, features vast, colorful stained-glass windows depicting local historical events.
