Sept-Îles Nature Reserve (France)

Weather…

The Sept-Îles Nature Reserve, located off the coast of Brittany in the Côtes-d'Armor department, is the oldest bird sanctuary in France. Established in 1912 by the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) to prevent the extinction of puffins, it was officially designated a national nature reserve in 1976. The reserve encompasses roughly 40 hectares of land across the archipelago and over 5,000 hectares of protected marine area. It is most famous for hosting the only colony of Northern Gannets in France, which nests on Île Rouzic and consists of thousands of pairs. In addition to seabirds, the area supports a permanent colony of grey seals. Due to strict conservation rules, landing on most of the islands is prohibited, and wildlife viewing is conducted via boat tours.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time is from May to July, when thousands of guillemots, gannets and puffins nest on the islands. In August and September, chicks are visible before they head out to sea.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning, seabirds fly out to fish and return late afternoon. At midday, activity on the cliffs is lower, but lighting conditions are good for photos.
📜
Etiquette
Landing on the islands is forbidden for bird protection; observation is only allowed from boats or the mainland. Approaching the cliffs by boat is limited to at least 100 meters.
🎒
What to bring
Good binoculars with 10x magnification are important for identifying birds on the distant cliffs. A waterproof camera bag is advisable, as it often drizzles or splashes along the coast.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve lies off the Breton coast and is only accessible by boat. Guided boat tours depart regularly from the harbors of Perros-Guirec and Ploumanac'h.
🦌
What to expect
Birds can be far out on the water - it's worth patiently scanning the sea surface with binoculars. Sometimes you have to wait for a good fishing flight, which gives spectacular images.
