Saint-Renan is a historic Breton town located in the Finistère department, just a few miles inland from the rugged Atlantic coast. Named after Saint Ronan, an Irish hermit who settled there in the 5th century, the town flourished as a jurisdictional and trade center during the Middle Ages. The Place du Vieux Marché is the heart of the town, surrounded by impressive granite and half-timbered houses that have stood for centuries. In the mid-20th century, Saint-Renan achieved international fame as the 'tin capital of Europe' due to extensive alluvial tin deposits found in the surrounding marshlands. The former open-cast mines have since been converted into a series of beautiful lakes, providing a unique landscape for leisure and nature walks. Today, the town is renowned for its Saturday morning market, which is one of the largest and most authentic in Brittany. Saint-Renan serves as a vital link between the urban area of Brest and the scenic Iroise coast, offering a high quality of life with deep cultural roots.
