Plouguerneau is located on the rugged northern coast of Finistère, in a region known as the 'Côte des Légendes'. The municipality is characterized by an exceptionally long coastline of over 45 kilometers, marked by small coves, rocks, and white sandy beaches. An absolute landmark is the lighthouse on Île Vierge, which at 82.5 meters is the tallest stone lighthouse in the world. The history of Plouguerneau is inseparably linked to the sea. For centuries, the harvesting of seaweed (goémon) was a vital source of income for the residents. Even today, the town remains an important center for seaweed processing in Europe. Besides the maritime economy, tourism plays a major role, with Plouguerneau being particularly popular among nature lovers and hikers (GR 34 route). The religious architecture, with numerous chapels and calvaries, bears witness to deep Breton traditions. The town is also known for its bustling Breton culture and language. Culinarily, seafood and fish are naturally in the spotlight, but traditional Breton crêpes are also omnipresent. The community is strongly committed to environmental protection and the preservation of maritime ecosystems.
