Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey (France)

Weather…

The Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel stands spectacularly atop a rocky tidal island in the English Channel, on the border between Normandy and Brittany. Its origins date back to 708 AD, following a vision by Bishop Aubert of Avranches of the Archangel Michael. Over the centuries, the monastery evolved into a major spiritual center and an impregnable fortress that successfully resisted sieges during the Hundred Years' War. Architecturally, the most impressive part is the 'Merveille' (the Marvel), a masterpiece of 13th-century Gothic architecture built directly into the steep rock face. After the French Revolution, the abbey served as a state prison until 1863, before being restored and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Today, Mont-Saint-Michel is one of France's most iconic landmarks, celebrated for the interplay between medieval engineering and the extreme tidal forces of the bay.
