Dol-de-Bretagne is one of Brittany's oldest and most historically significant towns, boasting a deep religious and political legacy. Once a prominent bishopric, it served as a spiritual capital for the region for centuries. Its architectural centerpiece is the Saint-Samson Cathedral, a masterpiece of Breton Gothic design built upon the foundations of an earlier Romanesque church. The town's historic core is filled with cobblestone streets and impeccably preserved timber-framed houses from the 15th and 16th centuries. Just outside the center stands the Menhir du Champ-Dolent, one of Brittany's largest and most impressive megaliths, towering over nine meters high. Situated on the edge of the Marais de Dol (Dol Marshes), the town provides a gateway to unique wetlands and was historically a vital defensive point near the coast.
