Carnac Stones (France)

Weather…

The Carnac Stones in Brittany represent the world's largest collection of megalithic monuments, dating back to the Neolithic period, approximately 3300 BC. Over 3,000 standing stones, known as menhirs, are arranged in precise lines stretching across nearly four kilometers of the landscape. The site is divided into several main alignments, including Ménec, Kermario, and Kerlescan, where the stones are positioned in decreasing size along the rows. Despite decades of archaeological study, the exact purpose of these alignments remains a mystery, with theories ranging from astronomical observatories to religious or ceremonial grounds. In addition to the menhirs, the area features dolmens (stone tombs) and massive burial mounds such as the Tumulus of Saint-Michel. Carved from local granite, these stones were moved significant distances by Neolithic communities using only primitive tools. To protect the fragile soil and vegetation, access to the stone fields is now partially restricted and managed through a visitor center. Carnac remains a profound testament to early human ingenuity and a central symbol of Breton prehistoric culture.
