Brech is an expansive and historic commune located in the Morbihan department of southern Brittany. The town is famous for being the site of the Battle of Auray in 1364, which was the final engagement of the War of the Breton Succession; the monumental Chartreuse d'Auray monastery was later built on the battlefield to commemorate the event. Today, this monastery is a significant cultural landmark, housing memorials to the victims of the 1795 Quiberon expedition. Brech is also home to the Ecomuseum of Saint-Dégan, an open-air museum that preserves traditional Breton farmhouses and rural ways of life from centuries past. The landscape is a beautiful mix of dense woodland, river valleys along the Loch, and traditional farmland, providing over 40 kilometers of marked trails for hikers and nature lovers. As part of the Auray Quiberon Terre Atlantique community, Brech has grown into a modern residential hub while fiercely protecting its Breton identity, including the use of the Breton language. The local economy is supported by a mix of agriculture, traditional craftsmanship, and a growing service sector fueled by its proximity to the Atlantic coast and major transport links.
