Tassin-la-Demi-Lune is an upscale residential community located on the western edge of the Lyon metropolis in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The city's unique name reflects the merger of the historic village of Tassin with the 'Demi-Lune' district, which was named after a crescent-shaped road layout designed in the 18th century to manage traffic at a major crossroads of royal routes. The area's history is deeply rooted in antiquity, as it sat upon the Via Agrippa, the primary Roman road leading out of Lugdunum (modern-day Lyon). In the Middle Ages, it was a fortified lordship, but its modern character took shape in the late 19th century when the advent of the railway turned it into a popular retreat for wealthy Lyonese merchants who built grand villas here. The town's most famous landmark is the 1907 clock tower, known simply as 'L'Horloge,' which stands at the heart of the busy Half-Moon intersection. Today, Tassin-la-Demi-Lune is a thriving suburban hub that successfully balances intensive commercial activity with quiet, leafy residential streets and high-quality public amenities, including the Atrium cultural center.
