Rumilly is strategically located between the lakes of Annecy and Bourget in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. As the historic capital of the fertile Albanais plain, the town looks back on a turbulent past dating back to Roman times when it was known as 'Romiliacum'. In the Middle Ages, it was an important fortress of the House of Savoy, withstanding numerous sieges, notably in the 17th century against the troops of Louis XIII. The town motto 'Eme rous, vo rous' (All red, therefore all equal) bears witness to the courage of the inhabitants during this period. The industrial revolution fundamentally changed Rumilly. Originally a center for tobacco processing and shoe manufacturing, the town became world-famous in 1956 with the establishment of Tefal. Today, the factory is one of the region's largest employers. Culturally, the 'Gros Tilleul', a giant lime tree in the town hall square, is a symbol of liberty and a meeting place for citizens. The old town, with its arcaded houses and the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, preserves the typical Savoyard character, while the surrounding landscape is convenient for outdoor activities.
