Rillieux-la-Pape is a key suburb of Lyon, located in the Rhône department. Formed in 1972 through the merger of Rillieux and Crépieux-la-Pape, it sits prominently on a plateau overlooking the Rhône Valley to the northeast of the city center. The town's architecture is largely defined by the 'Ville Nouvelle' project of the late 1960s, a major urban experiment featuring high-density housing integrated with public services. Geographically, it is bordered by the vast Grand Parc de Miribel-Jonage, a 2,200-hectare regional park that has a major escape for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts in the Lyon region. Historically, the area was a crossroads of Roman roads and medieval trade routes. Modern Rillieux-la-Pape has evolved into a diverse industrial and residential hub, with significant investments in urban renewal to modernize its mid-century housing estates. It remains strategically important due to its direct highway connections and its role in the Lyon metropolitan authority (Métropole de Lyon), serving as a bridge between the urban core and the countryside of the Dombes.
