Meximieux is a thriving town in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, positioned between the Dombes plateau and the Ain valley. Its history spans from Roman times to the Middle Ages, when it served as a fortified outpost. The town earned significant historical recognition during World War II for the Battle of Meximieux in September 1944; here, US Army units and French Resistance fighters successfully repelled a German counter-offensive, an achievement for which the town was awarded the Croix de Guerre. Modern Meximieux is a vital local economic hub, largely supported by its proximity to Lyon and the Plaine de l'Ain industrial zone. The town maintains a balance between its historical identity, visible in its central architecture and monuments, and its role as a residential and commercial center for the surrounding region, experiencing steady demographic growth due to its excellent transport links and quality of life.
