Lappeenranta Fortress (Finland)

Weather…

Lappeenranta Fortress, also known as the Old Town, is a historically significant fortification situated on the shores of Lake Saimaa. Originally started in the 18th century by the Swedes as a defensive outpost against Russia, it was massively expanded under Russian rule after the Treaty of Åbo in 1743. The fortress played a central role in the Swedish-Russian wars and later served as a garrison and a prison. Today, the area is a lively cultural center featuring museums, art galleries, small craft shops, and Finland's oldest Orthodox church, the Church of the Intercession, built in 1785. The well-preserved ramparts and bastions offer sweeping views over the Lappeenranta harbor and the lake. In summer, the fortress is the venue for numerous events, including the famous sandcastle festival on the nearby shore. The blend of military history and modern cultural life makes the fortress one of the most important landmarks in the border region between Finland and Russia.
