Naantali Convent Church (Finland)

Weather…

The Naantali Convent Church is the sole remaining structure of the former Vallis Gratiae Brigittine monastery, which was established in 1443. The current stone church was constructed between 1460 and 1462 and stands as one of Finland's most significant medieval architectural landmarks. Originally, the monastery served as a double convent for both nuns and monks, operating under the rule of Saint Birgitta of Sweden. Following the Reformation, the monastery was disbanded, but the church was preserved as a parish church for the local congregation, surviving several devastating city fires over the centuries. The interior preserves priceless medieval artifacts, including a wooden sculpture of Saint Birgitta and a grand altar retable. The iconic Baroque bell tower was added much later, in 1797, creating the characteristic silhouette that now overlooks the Naantali harbor. Today, the church is a primary venue for the renowned Naantali Music Festival, drawing thousands of visitors each year who come to experience its unique spiritual ambiance and deep historical roots.
