Gabal el-Shayib, also known as Shayib al-Banat, is the highest peak in the Eastern Desert and mainland Africa's part of Egypt, rising to approximately 2,187 meters. Located near the city of Hurghada in the Red Sea Governorate, it is part of the extensive Red Sea Hills mountain range. The geological structure of the mountain consists mainly of dark granite, giving it an imposing and rugged appearance. In local Bedouin culture, the mountain holds a significant place, and its name roughly translates to "the Old Man of the Girls." The ascent to the summit is regarded as one of the most challenging hikes in Egypt, rewarding climbers with vast views extending to the Red Sea coast. Due to its isolated position, the mountain supports unique flora and fauna adapted to the extreme conditions of the high desert. Today, it is a premier destination for experienced mountaineers and trekking enthusiasts seeking to explore the untouched wilderness of the Eastern Desert.
