Villa Riva is a prominent municipality in the Duarte province, situated along the lower reaches of the Yuna River, one of the most voluminous rivers in the Caribbean. Originally known as San Antonio del Yuna, the town was later renamed in honor of Gregorio Riva, a philanthropist and pioneer of regional infrastructure. Its geographical position within the marshy Gran Estero region establishes Villa Riva as one of the most important rice-growing areas in the Dominican Republic, though it also presents the constant challenge of periodic flooding. These floods, however, deposit fertile sediments that render the soils among the most productive in the country. Historically, Villa Riva served as a crucial inland port for transporting goods by boat to the Bay of Samaná. Today, the town is a vital commercial hub for the surrounding rural areas and is known for its resilient community that maintains a thriving agricultural economy despite climatic challenges.
