Bávaro Lagoon (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Laguna Bávaro is a protected wetland located in the eastern Dominican Republic, within the Verón-Punta Cana district of La Altagracia province. The protected area covers approximately 3 square kilometers and consists of a central brackish water lagoon surrounded by a dense belt of mangroves. Geographically, it sits parallel to the coastline and is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow system of dunes and coastal forest. The lagoon serves as a vital refuge for over 80 bird species, including endemic and migratory birds, as well as rare reptiles and amphibians. Despite the massive tourism development in the surrounding Bávaro region, the reserve remains a critical factor in protecting local biodiversity and filtering groundwater. Ecotourism activities such as kayaking and birdwatching are conducted in a controlled manner to minimize the impact on the ecosystem. The flora primarily includes red, black, and white mangroves, alongside various ferns and orchid species.
