Jyske Ås (Denmark)

Weather…

Jyske Ås is a prominent ridge in Vendsyssel, Northern Jutland, stretching over a length of approximately 38 kilometers. It was formed as a terminal moraine during the last ice age, when massive ice sheets from the north ground to a halt and deposited debris and sediment. The highest point of the ridge is Knøsen, which at 136 meters is one of the highest points in Denmark. The landscape of Jyske Ås is characterized by steep slopes, deep ravines, and extensive forests such as Dronninglund Storskov. Geologically, the ridge forms an important watershed between the Kattegat to the east and the North Sea to the west. Historically, the ridge was often a natural barrier due to its difficult topography, but it simultaneously offered strategic advantages for fortifications. Today, the region is a popular hiking area and home to diverse flora and fauna characteristic of the North Jutland moraine landscape.
