Fanø is the northernmost island in the Danish Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The island is famous for its two easy on the eye villages, Nordby and Sønderho. Sønderho, with its thatched-roof brick houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, is often cited as one of Denmark's most beautiful villages, preserving the legacy of a wealthy maritime past. The western side of the island features a massive sandy beach that can be over a kilometer wide at low tide. This vast area is well-suited for seal safaris, amber hunting, and kite flying; the annual International Kite Festival in June is the largest of its kind in Europe. Portions of the beach are even open to cars, making it easy to find a quiet spot along the coast. The island is just a 12-minute ferry ride from the city of Esbjerg. Fanø is a haven for nature lovers and cyclists, offering flat, well-maintained paths that wind through heather-covered dunes and meadows. Local culinary highlights include freshly smoked fish and the island's own craft brewery products, which pair perfectly with the serene island atmosphere.
