Aketi is a significant port and railway town situated in the Bas-Uele Province of northern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Located on the Itimbiri River, a tributary of the Congo, it functions as a major transshipment hub for regional commerce. Historically, Aketi served as the western terminus of the Vicicongo narrow-gauge railway, which connected the agricultural regions of the northeast with the waterways of the Congo Basin. During the colonial era, the town evolved into a logistical center for the export of cotton, coffee, and palm oil. Geographically, it lies within a low-lying basin characterized by dense tropical rainforests and intricate river systems. Despite the decline of the railway system in recent decades, Aketi remains a vital node for riverine transport and local trade. The town hosts substantial infrastructure, including port facilities and former railway workshops, though these are in need of modernization. The economic revitalization of the region is heavily dependent on the restoration of transport links to the rest of the country.
