The Aketi Railway Station was the strategic terminal of the Vicicongo narrow-gauge railway, established in the 1920s to tap into the resources of the Uele district. Operating on a 600mm track, the railway connected the agricultural hinterlands of the north to the port of Aketi on the Itimbiri River. Goods such as cotton, coffee, and minerals were transferred here from trains to river steamers for shipment toward the Congo River. The station complex included extensive maintenance workshops, engine sheds, and large warehouses, making it the industrial backbone of the region. During its peak in the 1950s, Aketi was one of the busiest logistics hubs in northern Belgian Congo. Following decades of economic stagnation and political conflict, rail operations have largely ceased, leaving the infrastructure in a state of decay. Today, the skeletal remains of locomotives and crumbling station walls stand as silent witnesses to a bygone era of colonial engineering.
