Agios Ioannis Cathedral (Cyprus)

Weather…

Agios Ioannis Cathedral, also known as St. John's Cathedral, is the primary religious center of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus located within the historic walls of Nicosia. The present structure was built in 1662 on the foundations of a 14th-century Benedictine abbey dedicated to St. John the Evangelist. While its exterior dimensions are relatively modest, the cathedral's interior is renowned for its overwhelming splendor, being entirely adorned with elaborate 18th-century wall paintings. These frescoes depict various biblical scenes as well as the discovery of the tomb of Apostle Barnabas, which historically validated the autocephaly of the Cypriot Church. The cathedral traditionally serves as the site for the enthronement of the Archbishops of Cyprus and is the official seat of the Archbishopric. Of particular note is the intricately carved and gilded iconostasis, which is considered a masterpiece of woodcraft and houses several precious icons. The single-aisle architecture of the church reflects the late Ottoman period style, with subtle Gothic remnants visible in the supporting arches. As a site of immense spiritual and historical importance, the cathedral stands as an indispensable monument embodying deeply rooted Orthodox traditions and national pride.
