Klis Fortress (Croatia)

Weather…

The Klis Fortress stands as a monumental defensive structure situated on a limestone cliff between the Mosor and Kozjak mountains, controlling the main pass into central Dalmatia. Its strategic importance dates back to the Illyrian tribe of the Dalmatae and the Roman era, but it achieved its greatest significance during the Middle Ages as the seat of Croatian dukes and kings. From the 15th century, it became a crucial bastion against the Ottoman expansion, defended valiantly by the Uskoks under the command of Captain Petar Kružić. The fortress was expanded and modified over centuries, reflecting various architectural styles from Romanesque to Baroque across its three defensive lines. A notable feature within the walls is the Church of Saint Vitus, which was converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule before being restored to a Christian church. Today, the fortress serves as an exceptional example of military fortification architecture and gives a panoramic view of the city of Split and the surrounding islands.
