Devil's Passage (Croatia)

Weather…

Vražji prolaz, also known as the Devil's Passage, is considered one of the most spectacular canyons in Croatia's Gorski Kotar region near the town of Skrad. The canyon, approximately 800 meters long, was carved into the limestone by the Jasle stream over thousands of years. At its narrowest point, the passage measures only two meters wide, while the rock walls rise almost vertically to heights of 100 meters. A system of metal walkways and stairs anchored into the rock enables passage through this dramatic geological formation. At the end of the canyon lies the Muževa hižica cave, where the local population hid during the Turkish wars in the 16th century. The canyon is part of a protected area that also includes the nearby Zeleni vir waterfall. The high humidity and low solar radiation in the depths of the canyon have favored a specific flora of mosses and ferns. Since 1962, the entire area has been under special state protection.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Easily accessible via the main entrance in Gorski Kotar, usually starting from the nearby village of Skrad. Well-marked signs lead directly to the dramatic, narrow canyon trail.
📅
Best season
Best visited between late spring and early autumn when the weather is mild and the suspended metal walkways are generally clear of ice or heavy winter snow.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The path mainly consists of suspended metal walkways traversing the narrow rock walls directly above the stream. It can be slippery due to the constant moisture in the gorge.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, non-slip footwear is essential for safely navigating the damp metal grids. A light waterproof jacket is highly recommended due to the canyon's cool and humid microclimate.
🅿️
Parking
A designated parking area is typically available near the trailhead or the mountain hut just outside the canyon entrance. Spaces can fill up quickly on pleasant summer weekends.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors should stay strictly on the provided walkways and supervise children closely at all times, as the river flows rapidly directly below the suspended metal path.
⏱️
Time needed
A complete walk through the narrow passage and back generally takes around one to two hours, depending on your individual pace and the time spent taking photographs.
