Playa Grande
Playa Grande is a prominent destination that effortlessly balances thrill-seeking surf culture with deep environmental conservation. Located just north of the bustling town of Tamarindo across a river estuary, it feels worlds apart due to its protected status as part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park. Travelers come here for the consistent, world-class wave breaks that stretch across the expansive coastline, making it a mecca for experienced surfers. At the same time, nature lovers are drawn to the magic of the giant leatherback sea turtles that come ashore to nest. The massive, light-sand beach is strictly regulated to protect the turtle nesting habitats, meaning there is no beachfront development or artificial lighting, preserving a raw, untouched beauty. Surfing is the main daytime activity, but visitors also enjoy long, solitary walks on the endless beach and exploring the nearby mangrove estuary by kayak to see crocodiles and tropical birds. Gastronomy in the small local community is laid-back, featuring healthy surf-café fare, vegan options, and hearty Costa Rican sodas. Playa Grande is about a 75-minute drive from the Liberia International Airport. Alternatively, it can be accessed from Tamarindo via a quick, inexpensive 'lancha' (small boat) ride across the estuary, though cars must drive the longer way around. The best time for surfing is throughout the dry season (December to April) when offshore winds create excellent barrels, while turtle nesting season peaks from October to March.
