Playa Avellanas
Known affectionately as "Little Hawaii", Playa Avellanas is a surfer's paradise boasting some of the best waves in Costa Rica. Visitors are drawn to its pristine, golden sands, mangrove forests, and the famous wooden boardwalk that winds through the wetlands. It is a tranquil escape from busier tourist hubs, offering a laid-back atmosphere excellent for relaxation and connection with nature. The nature here is wild and untouched, with howler monkeys swinging through the canopy and sea turtles occasionally visiting the shore. Gastronomy revolves around fresh seafood and casual beachside sodas, with Lola's being a legendary spot for a beachfront meal alongside their famous resident pigs. Getting to Playa Avellanas usually requires a 4x4 vehicle due to unpaved roads from Tamarindo or Liberia. The dry season, running from December to April, is considered the best time to visit for sunny days.
