Serranía de Chiribiquete is the largest tropical rainforest national park in the world, located in the heart of the Colombian Amazon basin. It is famous for its spectacular tepuis, sheer sandstone table-top mountains that rise from the dense jungle and are remnants of the ancient Guiana Shield. Chiribiquete is not only an ecological gem with immense biodiversity but also one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Americas. On the walls of the table mountains, there are an estimated 75,000 rock paintings, some over 20,000 years old, depicting scenes from the lives of prehistoric hunter-gatherers. The park was recognized by UNESCO in 2018 as both a Natural and Cultural World Heritage site. It also serves as a sanctuary for uncontacted indigenous peoples, which is why tourist access is extremely restricted. The region acts as a gigantic carbon sink and plays a crucial role in the global climate. Chiribiquete remains one of the least explored and most mysterious places on Earth, a true 'Terra Incognita' that preserves the history of humanity and nature in its purest form.
