Los Flamencos National Reserve (Chile)

Weather…

The Los Flamencos National Reserve is located in the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile, near the town of San Pedro de Atacama. Established in 1990, the reserve covers approximately 74,000 hectares and is divided into seven distinct sectors, each protecting a unique ecosystem within the Atacama Desert and the Altiplano. Its diverse territory includes iconic landmarks such as the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley), the Salar de Atacama salt flat, and the high-altitude Miscanti and Miñiques lagoons. As its name suggests, the reserve is a critical sanctuary for three flamingo species: the Andean, Chilean, and James's flamingos. The landscape is a dramatic display of salt crusts, active volcanoes, and wind-sculpted rock formations at elevations reaching over 4,000 meters. Wildlife also includes vicuñas, Darwin's rheas, and Andean foxes. In addition to its ecological value, the reserve preserves archaeological sites of the Atacameño people, reflecting ancient human adaptation to one of Earth's driest environments. It remains one of Chile's most popular protected areas for its otherworldly scenery and specialized biodiversity.
