Zakouma Elephant Sanctuary (Chad)

Weather…

The Zakouma Elephant Sanctuary is part of the Zakouma National Park in southeastern Chad and is considered one of Africa's most successful conservation stories. After the elephant population was decimated by rampant poaching between 2002 and 2010, dropping from over 4,000 to about 450 individuals, the African Parks organization took over management. Through strict protection measures and the involvement of the local population, the herd has stabilized and is now steadily growing again. Zakouma's elephants are famous for their distinct social behavior and the formation of massive herds, which has become rare in other parts of Africa. The landscape of acacia forests and seasonal floodplains provides handy living conditions for the pachyderms. Zakouma is now a beacon for ecotourism in Chad, attracting nature enthusiasts from around the world who wish to observe these majestic animals in their natural habitat. The protection of the elephants has positive effects on the entire ecosystem of the park, benefiting numerous other species. It stands as a symbol of the fight against the illegal ivory trade and the preservation of biodiversity.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Between February and April, the large elephants usually gather in massive numbers directly around the few remaining water depressions. When heavy seasonal rain arrives, the beautiful herds scatter widely.
🌅
Best time of day
The late afternoon is absolutely good for observing the huge herds safely drinking together bathed in the wonderfully warm light. In the intense midday heat, the grey giants mostly seek protective shade.
📜
Etiquette
Visitors must never leave their safari vehicles and are strictly required to stay on the official dirt tracks at all times during the tour. Sudden noises or frantic movements can startle beautiful elephants.
🎒
What to bring
Since observations usually take place from a highly safe distance, a long focal length camera lens is incredibly valuable to have handy. Do not forget to bring a wide sun hat and plenty of fresh drinking water.
🧭
Getting there
Zakouma is highly remote and is mostly safely reached as part of organized safaris featuring chartered flights or robust drives. Plan this trip well in advance, as the logistical requirements are incredibly high.
🦌
What to expect
Although the elephant density here is high, searching the massive terrain often requires very extended, highly dusty drives. Remain incredibly patient and carefully enjoy the remarkably rich birdlife in the meantime.
