Carnot is a significant town in the west of the Central African Republic, whose history is inextricably linked to its wealth of mineral resources, particularly gold. Founded on the banks of the Mambéré River, the settlement developed at the end of the 19th century into a central administrative post for the French colonial administration. The town was named in honor of the French President Sadi Carnot. The discovery of gold deposits in the vicinity triggered an influx of prospectors and traders, permanently altering the region's economic structure. The townscape is defined by the remnants of colonial buildings and the evidence of gold mining, which served as the primary source of income for decades. Geographically, Carnot is situated in a hilly landscape rich in river systems, which favored the extraction of alluvial gold. In addition to mining, Carnot plays an important role as an agricultural center, particularly for the cultivation of grains and fruit. Despite its fluctuating history, Carnot remains a symbol of Central Africa's resource abundance and the associated hopes and challenges of the local population.
