Jaime Mota Barracks (Cape Verde)

Weather…

The Jaime Mota Barracks is one of the most prominent historical buildings in Praia, serving as the headquarters of the Armed Forces of Cape Verde. Its origins date back to 1826, though the current neoclassical appearance mostly stems from an expansion phase around 1872. Located on the edge of the Plateau district, the structure is notable for its expansive yellow facade, symmetrical rows of windows, and an imposing main portal. The barracks are named after Jaime Mota, a Cape Verdean national hero who died during the struggle for independence. Historically, the site was a strategic point for the colonial defense of Santiago Island against maritime threats. In addition to its military function, the building now houses a military museum displaying documents and artifacts related to the history of Cape Verdean defense.
