Dona Maria Pia Lighthouse (Cape Verde)

Weather…

The Dona Maria Pia Lighthouse, also known as the Farol da Ponta Temerosa, is a prominent landmark located at the southern entrance of Praia harbor on Santiago Island. It was constructed in 1881 during the reign of King Luis I of Portugal and named after his consort, Queen Maria Pia of Savoy. The white octagonal tower reaches a height of about 21 meters and sits atop a cliff, giving it a focal plane of 38 meters above sea level. Originally, the lighthouse was built to guide vessels into the strategically important port of the capital and to enhance maritime safety in the Atlantic. Its architecture is typical of the colonial era, featuring an adjacent house for the lighthouse keeper. Despite modern navigational advancements, the tower remains an active aid to navigation and a popular destination for scenic walks.
