Povoação Velha is the oldest settlement on the island of Boa Vista and served as its capital until 1810. The village is set at the foot of the Rocha Estância mountain in the southwestern part of the island. Established in the late 16th century, the site bears witness to the early colonial history of Cape Verde. The small chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, perched on a hill overlooking the village, was built in 1828 and remains a significant religious monument. The architecture of Povoação Velha is simple and traditional, with many old stone houses preserving its historical character. Today, the village often serves as a gateway for excursions to the spectacular Santa Monica beach, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the archipelago.
