Boussouma Hills (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Boussouma Hills are located in central Burkina Faso within the Sanmatenga Province, roughly 80 kilometers north of the capital, Ouagadougou. Geologically, they consist of a range of hills and plateaus composed of Precambrian rocks, primarily granite and gneiss. These elevations rise sharply from the surrounding peneplain, reaching heights of up to 400 meters above sea level. The slopes of the hills are often steep and scarred by erosion gullies, creating a rugged and fractured landscape. Botanically, the region is dominated by shrub savanna that becomes denser within the valleys. The hill ranges act as a local watershed, feeding several small tributaries of the Nakambé River. Historically, the Boussouma Hills served as a vital strategic refuge and the power center of the Boussouma Kingdom, one of the most influential states within the Mossi confederation.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this undulating central terrain mostly involves driving on dirt or gravel paths branching off from larger regional roads. While 4x4 vehicles are best, a robust standard vehicle managed by a local driver can usually handle the journey.
📅
Best season
The dry season from November to early March is generally the most comfortable time to appreciate the subtle hills. The heavy summer rains easily wash out the rudimentary dirt roads, rendering travel extremely difficult and unpleasant.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area gives a slightly undulating landscape characterized by gentle inclines, low scrub bushes, and exposed reddish soils. Walking the hills is remarkably easy, lacking severe steepness, though loose gravel patches are quite common.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes and long, breathable clothing are perfectly adequate for exploring these gentle hills. Wide-brimmed hats and large bottles of water are necessary due to the continuous exposure to the strong regional sun.
🅿️
Parking
True parking lots are entirely absent; vehicles simply pull safely off the main dirt tracks near the areas of interest. Always ensure your vehicle does not block local traffic routes or rural pathways utilized by community farmers.
⚠️
Safety
Although the hills lack extreme drops, the primary dangers are related to the intense heat and the significant risk of severe dehydration. Hiring a local escort is recommended primarily to help navigate the maze of informal rural footpaths.
⏱️
Time needed
A relaxed stroll through a section of the undulating landscape typically requires just one or two hours from your vehicle. More dedicated hikers might spend a leisurely half-day surveying the wider pastoral scenery before continuing their journey.
