Kaya Highlands (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

The Kaya Highlands in the Sanmatenga province of north-central Burkina Faso form part of the central Mossi plateau. The region is characterized by a rocky topography and an average elevation of about 300 meters above sea level, with numerous hilltops dominating the landscape. Kaya is historically famous for its long-standing leather craftsmanship, which dates back to the time of the ancient Mossi kingdoms and continues to define the city's economic identity today. The vegetation consists predominantly of shrub savanna, adapted to the seasonal rainfall patterns of the Sudano-Sahelian zone. The soils are partially prone to erosion, which is why traditional water and soil conservation techniques, such as stone bunds (Cordons pierreux), are widespread. As a regional trade center, Kaya links the drier north with the more fertile center of the country. Its geographical position makes the plateau an important watershed for various seasonal rivers that are indispensable for small-scale agriculture.
