Oursi Lake (Burkina Faso)

Weather…

Mare d'Oursi is a shallow, seasonal lake in northern Burkina Faso, situated in the heart of the Sahel zone and regarded as one of West Africa's most significant wetlands. During the rainy season, the water surface expands to up to 7,000 hectares, becoming a vital refuge for thousands of migratory birds from Europe and Asia. The lake was designated a RAMSAR site in 1990 under international protection due to its ecological importance. In the extreme dry season, the water level shrinks dramatically, leading to a high concentration of nutrients but also increasing the pressure on resources from the livestock of nomadic Fulani herders. The surrounding landscape is characterized by shifting dunes and sparse thorn-bush savanna, making the lake a life-giving oasis. Biological diversity includes rare species such as the greater flamingo and various pelican species. Despite its importance, the ecosystem is highly endangered by advancing desertification and overgrazing. Nevertheless, Mare d'Oursi remains an indispensable hub for the nomadic way of life and global bird conservation.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Located in the northern Sahel zone of Burkina Faso, the lake is mostly reached via rugged sandy tracks from regional centers. Hiring a dedicated 4x4 vehicle and an experienced local guide is strongly recommended for this remote area.
📅
Best season
Visiting during the dry season provides the best chance to see the lake functioning as a vital oasis for nomadic herds and wildlife. The harsh Sahelian heat peaks just before the rains, so timing the visit in cooler morning hours is well-suited.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is characterized by classic Sahelian features, with vast sand dunes and arid scrublands surrounding the shallow water. Walking near the lake involves navigating soft sand and occasionally sticky mud near the fluctuating waterline.
🎒
What to bring
Comprehensive sun protection, including wide-brimmed hats and high SPF sunscreen, is absolutely critical in the blinding Sahel environment. Visitors must bring all their own drinking water, alongside closed-toe shoes to protect against hot sand.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is generally informal and done on stable, flat ground at a considerable distance from the lake's soft edges. It is standard practice to follow the advice of local guides regarding where to safely halt vehicles in the sandy terrain.
⚠️
Safety
Security in the northern Sahel requires careful planning and up-to-date local intelligence due to regional instability. Extreme heat exhaustion and severe dehydration are major environmental risks that require constant management and vigilance.
⏱️
Time needed
Most travelers spend around two to three hours at the lake itself, observing the unique interaction between the environment and wildlife. The overall excursion often takes an entire day due to the slow driving speeds required on sandy Sahel routes.
