Koudougou is the third-largest city in Burkina Faso and the capital of Boulkiemdé Province, located approximately 100 kilometers west of Ouagadougou. The city experienced an economic boom in the 20th century due to the construction of the Abidjan-Niger railway line and the founding of the Faso Fani textile factory, which once formed the backbone of local industry. Geographically, Koudougou lies in a savanna zone known for the cultivation of cereals and shea nuts. Historically, the city is closely linked to Mossi culture and serves as a major educational center for the country, particularly through the University of Koudougou. The city is also known for the annually held Nuits Atypiques de Koudougou (NAK), an international cultural festival that promotes music, dance, and theater. Modern urban development focuses on infrastructure expansion and the promotion of small businesses. The architecture is a mix of modern administrative buildings and traditional mud dwellings adapted to the semi-arid climate.
