Hisarya Fortress (Bulgaria)

Weather…

The Hisarya Fortress, located in ancient Diocletianopolis, is one of the best-preserved Roman defensive structures in Bulgaria. The city was founded in the late 3rd century AD by Roman Emperor Diocletian, who valued the strategic location and healing thermal springs. The fortress wall encloses an area of about 30 hectares and extends for a total length of 2,327 meters, reaching heights of 11 meters in some sections. Particularly famous is the South Gate, known as 'The Camels,' which stands as an outstanding example of Roman engineering. Within the walls lie remains of monumental public buildings, thermal baths, amphitheaters, and early Christian basilicas. Hisarya was a significant administrative and spa center of the Roman Empire in the province of Thrace during late antiquity. Archaeological finds confirm continuous settlement for millennia due to the mineral-rich water sources. Today, the fortress is part of an archaeological reserve and forms the heart of the modern spa town of Hisarya. Visitors can tour the imposing walls and admire valuable artifacts in the nearby museum.
